Kamaran Mohammad, expert in geopolitics, security issues and international relations, is an Assistant Lecturer of Political Science at College of Law and Politics, Salahaadin University, in Erbil. In the following exclusive article for EPOS WorldView, he discusses the future of Mosul, analysing the position of all the armed groups involved in the operation to retake the city after more than two years of Islamic State occupation. Mr. Mohammad tries to answer two questions: how can these forces participate in rebuilding and governing Mosul? Can they be reintegrated into formal army and state institutions? Rebuilding Mosul and all other liberated areas requires a national and comprehensive strategy but, at the moment, there is no vision and common understanding of the priorities, Mr. Mohammad states

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, Syria's 5-years war has killed more than 250,000 people, with half of the population estimated to have fled its hometown. Refugees have been flowing across the neighbouring countries' boundaries, and those dangerous crossings are the subject of "Border", an Italian movie about Syria's Civil War which was diplayed at the 2016 Italian Film Festival in Scotland. "Border" has given voice and visibility to a tragedy which is still ongoing but always forgotten, and this is the strong point and the added value of this Italian film directed by Alessio Cremonini

Men and women are potential victims of sexual violence in the same way. Male rape is not worth less than female rape, and should not be silenced, nor as a tangible phenomenon nor as possible evidence. Sexual violence against men in conflict situations is an ordinary phenomenon: male rape can be seen as an instrument of war to destroy men who should be the guardians of society, and to erode the sanctity attached to their masculinity

Male rape as an instrument of war

EPOS Insights

Although less common than female sexual assault, male raping as a war weapon is increasing. It is used as an instrument of terror and group punishment, an expression of ethnic hatred and humiliation. It is also intended to emasculate and shatter leadership structures. Male rape has become a tactic of war, both in Uganda and Syria, where a increasing number of men has been exposed to sexual violence during the conflicts
