Men and women are potential victims of sexual violence in the same way. Male rape is not worth less than female rape, and should not be silenced, nor as a tangible phenomenon nor as possible evidence. Sexual violence against men in conflict situations is an ordinary phenomenon: male rape can be seen as an instrument of war to destroy men who should be the guardians of society, and to erode the sanctity attached to their masculinity

Epos converses with Seema Shekhawat

by Nicolamaria Coppola (EPOS)
EPOS Conversations

Seema Shekhawat is an Indian social scientist and expert in gender, conflict and peace; in this exclusive interview for EPOS she talks about the film India's Daughter, and the echo and the effects that its banning has had in India. India's Daughter is a "controversial" documentary-film directed by Leslee Udwin, based on the 2012 Delhi gang rape and murder of Jyoti Singh, a 23-year-old woman. Before the film was even released, it has been banned in India and has caused much upheaval. Why has Delhi banned and censored the documentary? What is India afraid of? Seema Shekhawat replies to these and other questions, and she analyses the issues of rape in India, arguing that both society and state together have to act to prevent sexual violence against women

Male rape as an instrument of war

Monday, 07 April 2014 20:03
by Nicolamaria Coppola

EPOS Insights

Although less common than female sexual assault, male raping as a war weapon is increasing. It is used as an instrument of terror and group punishment, an expression of ethnic hatred and humiliation. It is also intended to emasculate and shatter leadership structures. Male rape has become a tactic of war, both in Uganda and Syria, where a increasing number of men has been exposed to sexual violence during the conflicts
