The hopes of revival of India-Pakistan peace talks received a set back after the Pathankot incident in the first week of January 2016. The Pathankot incident belied the hopes, and in turn weakened the constituency of peace and strengthened the constituency of spoilers. Pathankot happened after one week of Indian Prime Minister Modi’s visit to Lahore.  India has demanded that unless Pakistan takes action against the culprits of the attack, it would not engage in dialogue. Pakistan’s position has been it would take action on the basis of evidence. What will it happen? What future for India-Pakistan peace process? Debidatta Aurobinda Mahapatra, EPOS analyst from India and expert in conflict management in South Asia, has given his answer to these and other questions

What "Peace" means in Liberia

Wednesday, 02 October 2013 09:56

For most Liberians, peace is not just the absence of the guns. The actual meaning of peace goes beyond all aspects of life. To a larger extend, some people define peace as the presence of equal opportunities and justice; improved health care, good infrastructure, food security and better educational system. To tackle these issues, the Government of Liberia launched a participatory approach called the Poverty Reduction Strategy or PRS in 2008 following unprecedented nationwide consultations. The PRS as an opened, collaborative and peaceful roadmap for national development supposed to also provide the opportunities where Liberians can amicably resolve their differences

Peace is a scarce commodity in South Asia. India and Pakistan fought more against each other than developing friendly relations: they remain at loggerheads over territorial disputes and other contentious issues. Nawaz Sharif holds a promise for a better future for Pakistan, and also for India-Pakistan relations and for South Asia

Two events exacerbated the fragile relations between India and Pakistan, the border skirmishes in January and the violence in Kashmir after execution of one of its Muslim residents by India. These two events impacted negatively the relations of the past decade. The atmosphere of trust and goodwill was at a higher scale before these events. Peace in the subcontinent suffered and the prospects of Kashmir turning violent appeared imminent

The prospects of peace in the Indian subcontinent post-26/11 appear bleak. The meeting of the top leaders of India and Pakistan at the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation summit in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg on 16 June 2009 did not bring any respite to the peace seekers in the subcontinent as the pronouncements aftermath added only to the fragile nature of bilateral relations.

The recent exchange of prisoners for video showing evidence of their healthy conditions, may be interpreted as an alternative option to pave the way to unstrained relations in deeply rooted crisis situations of the Middle East. Credible third party mediators, not limited to above area, seem to be well suited for conducting prisoners swap talks, particularly when both counterparts are keen to wrap up a deal, but do not have the capacity as a result of institutional limitations.
