Europeism or EU, that is the question

All countries of West Balkans are doing their best to leap closer to the European Union. In Serbia post-elections, the predominant ideology is "Europeism", expressed by all political parties: it prevails as a discourse in internal and foreign policies, without alternative. However, there is a lack of rules of engagement, having in mind that advancing “toward Europe, but with Kosovo” can be achieved even via Russia, with unavoidable USA support; or in any other way that implies an open cry for help for a country which is unable to solve its crucial internal problems

“Corruption is our country’s middle name” - Miroslav Prokopijevic , political analyst, said after the general elections in Serbia. Throughout the whole Balkan region, corruption trend in the sphere of public acquisitions has reached a very high level in the last couple of years. However, Serbian system is still gaining momentum, in spite of strict remonstrations from the European Commission, anti-corruption bodies and the media in the country.

Good News for the Balkans

Good News for the Balkans. Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia have joined the EU free visa regime at the end of 2009. A fact that shows that these countries are “mature” enough for the EU, that is that they are able to meet the over 50 criteria required, including the reforms in security that render the visa superfluous. Nevertheless, the situation in the Balkans remains very complex. Croatia is burdened by the issue of the territorial waters, a dispute with Slovenia.
