From the 3rd to the fth  of September 2014, for the seventh consecutive year, EPOS was in Poland as institutional partner of the Economic Forum in Krynica. Organized regularly since 1991, the Economic Forum is a recognized event in Central and Eastern Europe: its mission is "to foster favourable climate for development of political and economic cooperation between the European Union and neighbouring States". Each year the Forum is visited by more than 2500 guests – political, economic and social leaders – and 500 journalists from nearly 60 countries of Europe, Asia and America. It is the biggest event of this type in Central and Eastern Europe.

In occasion of the 24th Economic Forum, EPOS organized an exclusive discussion-panel entitled Immigration Policy of the EU – Experiences from Eastern and Southern Boarders.

CONCEPT NOTE: The problem of illegal immigration concerns not only EU border countries but also other member states that are often main destinations of the immigrants from non-EU countries. In October 2013 all eyes in Europe were on the Italian island Lampedusa where a ship with more than 300 illegal immigrants sank. This catastrophe showed that the problem of illegal immigration cannot be ignored any longer and there are necessary some common solutions. Also Eastern boarders of the EU have to tackle the problem of illegal immigration. What measures should the EU institutions take to prevent another Lampedusa?

Emanuela C. Del Re, Chair of EPOS, moderated the discussion.

The panelists were prominent representatives of Europe:

- Laurent Mushel, Director of Migration and Asylum, DG Home Affairs, European Commission, France;

- Bohdan Ferens, Senior Consultant, Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine;

- Thorsten Klute, Secretary of State, Ministry of Employment, Integration and Social Affairs of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany;

- Irini Pari, President, Group for Immigration and Integration, European Economic and Social Committee, EESC, Greece;

- Antonio Ricci, Senior Researcher, IDOS, Study and Research Centre Statistical Dossier on Immigration, Italy;

- Marya Rozanova, Chairperson of the Board, NGO Center for Civil, Social, Scientific and Cultural Initiatives "Strategia", Russia.
